Pipe and Plumbing Protection
Know the location of your main water shut-off valve. In a freeze emergency, you need to act in seconds — not spend 10 minutes searching.
Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas: crawlspace, garage, attic, and exterior walls. Foam pipe insulation costs under $2/linear foot at any hardware store.
Keep cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks open during extreme cold to allow warm air to circulate around pipes on exterior walls.

Ice Dam and Roof Protection

Make sure attic vents are unobstructed. Proper ventilation keeps the roof cold and uniform, preventing the temperature differential that creates ice dams.
After heavy snow, use a roof rake to remove the bottom 3–4 feet of snow from the eave area. Do not climb on a snow-covered roof.
If ice dams form, never use a pick or chisel — you will damage shingles. Create channels using calcium chloride ice melt filled in pantyhose laid across the dam to let water drain.
