

The bathroom is the most demanding flooring environment in the home. Any material you choose must handle standing water, humidity cycling from showers, and slip hazard risk. Not every flooring material is equal to those demands — some are outright wrong choices regardless of how they look in a showroom.

Porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, making it denser, harder, and almost completely non-porous. Its water absorption rate is below 0.5% — compared to 3-7% for standard ceramic — which means it resists moisture damage, mold, and staining far better. A properly installed porcelain tile floor with quality grout and a moisture barrier can last 50+ years in a bathroom.
The downsides are real: porcelain is cold, hard on feet, and expensive to install because it requires precise cutting and skilled labor. A heated floor system (hydronic or electric) significantly improves comfort and adds $500-$2,000 to the project.
LVP (luxury vinyl plank) and WPC (wood-plastic composite) core vinyl are 100% waterproof throughout their entire thickness, not just at the surface. This means standing water, steam, and humidity cycling don't damage the material structurally. LVP is also significantly warmer underfoot than tile, installs faster, and costs less.
The limitation is that LVP grout lines and seams can allow water to seep beneath the floor if not properly sealed. In wet shower areas, tile remains the better choice. LVP works well for the main bathroom floor area outside the shower footprint.
DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) measures slip resistance on wet surfaces. The ANSI A137.1 standard recommends a minimum DCOF of 0.42 for bathroom floor tiles. Smooth, polished stone and glossy tiles often fall below this threshold. Always ask for the DCOF rating when selecting bathroom tile — or choose a textured or matte finish that naturally meets the standard.
Laminate is a common mistake — it looks like LVP, is similarly priced, but has a wood-composite core that swells and delaminates when exposed to moisture. Carpet in a bathroom is a hygiene problem: it traps moisture, promotes mold, and is impossible to clean thoroughly. Solid hardwood is unsuitable for full bathrooms for the same moisture reasons as laminate.
